TNB worker suffers severe burns in blast
GEORGE TOWN: A Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) sub-contractor worker was seriously injured during a blast at a substation in Jalan Kuala Kangsar here.
Zaini Ismail suffered 90% burns on his body in the 8pm blast, which also caused a blackout in parts of the town here.
The 35-year-old had been carrying out repairs on a switchgear with eight colleagues when the blast occurred.
It is learnt that the workers tried to douse the fire before Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived. No one else was injured.
Beach Street Fire and Rescue Station senior operation officer Shamsuddin Ahmad said they had to wrap Zaini in protective gear before he was rushed to the Penang Hospital.
He said live cables at the site could have led to the explosion.
The actual cause is under probe by various authorities.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said TNB, firemen and the police forensics team were jointly investigating the case.
